Shift of Hermes' godlihood

[plant food] · planted 2026-04-27 · history

In archaic times, trade took place at dangerous and ambiguous village borders. As commercial networks of the Greek city-states developed, the place of exchange shifted to more organized markets at the heart of new urban centers. Hermes became "he of the agora", patron saint to merchants. His Epithet "tricky" came to mean "good for securing a profit".
