Tolkien lists three mechanics by which the Fairy-Story—specifically with universal folk and fairy tale motifs throughout the world—was created:
- Independent invention (original storyteller)
- Diffusion (Tolkien calls "borrowing in space")
- Inheritance (Tolkien calls "borrowing in time")
